Selfless good deeds, do they really exist?

24 Jun

Hi Everyone…

Yesterday I read this blog entry by my Uncle (My Maama):bizarreprodigy, Read a few lines at that time and I saw my senior Anil around my desk and I called him up for a small discussion.

I WAS of the view that “Selfless good deeds do exist” for many years but past 2 years of my life have changed me a lot and this thinking too was changed 2 years back. Lately I have been of the view that “Selfless good deeds DON’T exist” but Thanks to Anil who proved me wrong by sharing a few instances with me. Had it been somebody else other than Anil I wouldn’t have accepted the fact that yes Selfless good deeds do exist. He started with a few examples but in the end my answer to all was: “Sirji we do good for others to keep us self satisfied in a way that we feel proud about it that today we helped somebody, tomorrow God will do something good for us…. Ok some of us won’t think this way too but still they will always fall in the category of inner satisfaction… They do good to make themselves satisfied in life, which according to me is something still selfish.”

But then what he proved to me:

“Indirectly we are affecting lives of people, sometimes strangers around us in a better way… We don’t know when we have influenced others and helped them in this life… As an example when I am doing/talking something categorized as good,  if somebody is watching me, listening to me and getting influenced in a better way then we are definitely helping the other person selflessly “.

Well this was something concrete to me…. I accepted this.

Then I continued with this discussion with two of my new best friends Rumani and Raina in bus. Rumani and Raina were both of the view that Selfless good deeds do exist. I told to them that anything I do in this life is directly or indirectly for my self benefit. Rumani kept on holding to her point that basic needs like eating for one’s survival should be kept aside from this discussion but here too I didn’t agree with her. I am eating, drinking water for MYSELF i.e. being selfish… It turned out to be a long good discussion…

Then in the evening I came across one more thought to prove myself wrong. It goes like this: “”If we are in a state of unawareness and there we are doing something good for others then this might be called as a selfless good deed. Example: From 0-6 years of her/his age a child is in a state of unawareness, but this little child will make her/his parents, family, people around them happy.. No reason but children do make 99.99% of us happy all the time, No matter what…. “

I am gonna conclude it here but to the readers of this post I would love to know more examples to prove me wrong again….
Also, while writing this My maama commented on a post which I would like you to read: ” Bhanje – when you write about it, do think and mention “why is it important to have Selfless Good deeds”, why cant we all be happy with “good deeds”"…. Looking forward for your comments on this too…

Live and Let live…. Peace!! :)

“As an example when I am doing/talking something categorized as good, if somebody is watching me, listening to me and getting influenced in a better way then we are definitely helping the other person selflessly” – This is not helping; helping is offering or contributing that is necessary to achieve a task. If someone just listened to you and found it useful that is not a deed you did. It is not Help.

Similarly to the previous point -”If we are in a state of unawareness and there we are doing something good for others then this might be called as a selfless good deed”; if you are in the state of unawareness then that is not even a deed you did let alone it being a selfless deed. Now coming to the child part, Kids dont know they are doing anything to make other happy; they do everything that makes them happy – lets look at Aabhya – “She does whatever she loved to do and does at her own pace and agrees with us at some times as well.” As a matter of fact, given all actions by Kids are purely for their happiness, and not for others, they are most selfish by the definition of it.

      1) Suppose I was talking to somebody and making the other person to avoid something bad he was about to do… also this was heard by someone who too avoided doing something bad because of my words….

      2) Ok a child is someone who is too selfish but then it strongly goes in this favor: A child inspite of being selfish is making me feel happy…

I guess you won’t regard these two things under the category of deeds but they are indirectly an act which is carried out,..
because, definition of deeds: “Something that is carried out; an act or action.”
